DESCRIPTION ABOUT University of Limerick - Kemmy Business School

The Kemmy Business School (KBS) is one of four faculties at the University of Limerick. The University was established in 1972 and inaugurated as the University of Limerick in 1989. It was the first university to be established since the foundation of the State in 1922 and in common with all Irish universities, it is a publicly funded institution. With close to 12,000 students, including more than 2,000 international students each year, UL is a young and enterprising university with a proud record of innovation in education and scholarship. As a research-led university, we foster our distinctiveness as an institution through a focus on research with impact, graduate employability, industry engagement and the provision of an outstanding campus environment. We are located in the city of Limerick (established in 812 A.D.), Ireland’s third-largest city and the largest centre of population in the Mid-West region. The campus is located along the river Shannon, on a glorious estate of some 137.5 hectares (340 acres). Our mission is to be a “distinctive, pioneering and connected university that shapes the future through educating and empowering people to meet the real challenges of tomorrow.” (UL Strategic Plan, Broadening Horizons 2015-19). In support of this mission, UL’s vision is to be: “Internationally recognised as a distinctively progressive, research-led university that provides an engaging student experience, conducts world-class research renowned for its translational impact and is globally and locally connected in terms of its contribution to economic, social and cultural life. “ The university offers more than 70 undergraduate programmes across Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences; Education and Health Sciences, Science and Engineering and the Kemmy Business School. UL also delivers a strong postgraduate offering with more than 100 taught postgraduate programmes to Doctoral and Post-doctoral level. A strong relationship with the corporate world has represented a cornerstone of what is unique about the university - reflected in the introduction of a cooperative education module (work placement) when the University was founded in 1972. Cooperative education is an integral part of all undergraduate programmes at UL and students spend a period of seven to nine months in full-time paid work experience either in Ireland or abroad. The high numbers of Irish-based multinationals with global or EMEA reach can also offer students an experience of “internationalisation at home”. The implementation of work placement involves the Cooperative Education and Careers Division (CECD), as well as a range of employers, working initially with students (including first years) on areas such as building a career portfolio, expectations of the workplace, skills and competences for the world of work in advance of their Co-op placement. Known as ‘Ireland’s Sporting Campus’, UL boasts Ireland’s first altitude training centre, an Olympic-sized swimming pool and the National Strength and Conditioning Centre. Our new 3G pitches are the largest artificial grass development in Europe. Some recent initiatives across the University include our leadership on key national research clusters, involving collaboration with other higher education institutions and major industrial partners that have secured €130 million in research funding since 2013; we are home to the Ireland’s newest medical school (2007), the Graduate Entry Medical School; we were named the University of the Year 2015 in the Sunday Times Good University Guide, we have seen a doubling of international student numbers between 2008 and 2013, and we are making investments of €80 million in the ongoing capital development of student residences, research and teaching, enterprise and sports facilities.
