When we talk about the role of education in modern society, education can become a profitable business, and universities can become city-building enterprises that create high-paying jobs. Education is a whole industry that not only pays taxes and provides jobs, but also changes life in the regions, gives people confidence that education is the foundation of our society. I firmly believe that education is as important as industry, as oil and gas. If education is strong and stable, the economy will grow with it. On the other hand, if education deteriorates every year, no natural resources will be able to ensure the country's development. For that, every year AlmaU opens new directions and think tanks – Center for Creative Industry, Center for Technology Commercialization, Sustainable Development Center and others.
As an educational institution, we strive to foster resilience in young people - future leaders - as the main driving force of society to further realize the SDGs. Since 2009, AlmaU has been a signatory of PRME (Principles for Responsible Management Education) under the UN Global Compact. In 2021, AlmaU, together with a number of universities in Central Asia, initiated the creation of the Eurasian Chapter of PRME. In 2023, we have launched the Rector’s Club Cetral Asia+ initiative to promote open dialogue, networking among educators, policy makers, academics, researchers, experts for the good of positive transformation of regional higher education.
We are proud to follow the third mission of universities and serve our society by developing and supporting initiatives in the field of civil society, sustainable development and responsible management education. The future, but also the present, is our youth. They have the potential to shape the course of our world, to innovate, to lead and to effect positive change. As a society and as institutions of higher education, it is our responsibility to equip them with the knowledge, values and skills to become effective leaders in a rapidly changing and interconnected world. Such university initiatives as “Uly Balqash Shaqyrady!” - an iced Balkash lake crossing, “Syr Qorgany – Sekseyil” - an ecological saxaul-planting campaign to retain the dried-up soil of the seabed, the establishment of the multidisciplinary college “Zeynep” in a rural area in North Kazakhstan are the examples of the institutional commitment to serve the interests of society.
