In order to participate in a graduate level program, one is required to take an exam called the Gaokao. If the score is not high enough, students are denied access to the Benke level (bac +4) and instead takes classes at the Zhuanke level (bac + 2 or 3) or attend a private school (most of which are at the Zhuanke level).
